The city of Lathrop originally was known as Wilson's Station when it consisted of little more than a store and schoolhouse, before construction of the Central Pacific Railroad around 1870. At the time, the town, founded by Leland Stanford, was caught up in controversy with Stockton about the Central Pacific alignment. It was renamed for Stanford's brother-in-law, Charles Lathrop, and became an important division point and rail stop by 1871. Growth in Lathrop was erratic until the 1980s, when the town began to expand rapidly. This resulted in incorporation in 1989. Lathrop continues to grow. With approximately 75 percent of its land area zoned for industrial development and a prime location at Interstate 5 and Highway 120, the opportunities for growth are enormous. | |
