The modern boundaries of Newark were drafted in 1875 by the Perrin brothers, who established a dairy and laid out the town. Despite jokes from local ranchers about the boggy site chosen for the town, the brothers eventually attracted the Pacific Land Investment Co. Settlers, interested in parcels of inexpensive farmland, moved to the area and grew wheat, potatoes and onions. By 1878, trains, a hotel and the first ferry boat were bringing travelers to the town. Newark has grown into a suburban blue- and white-collar city. An increasing por-tion of local industry is related to high technology as Silicon Valley spreads northward from Fremont. Sun Microsystems houses 3,500 employees in the city.
The recent opening of Newark’s posh new W Suites Hotel was celebrated by businessmen and travelers alike. The city is also home to NewPark Mall, one of the major shopping centers in Alameda County. | |
